Dropping52

Kamloops sits at City Score rank #143 with a standing of 42%, from 8 of 8 open-data pillars (tax, construction, connectivity, indoor air, water, seismic hazard, growth, safety). Missing pillars score at median standing so thin coverage cannot inflate the rank. Dropping 52 places versus 2022 (#91 → #143).

Latest owned placements: building permit value rank #72 of 172 (2025); indoor radon rank #22 of 117 at 135 Bq/m³ survey mean; residential mill rate rank #81 of 172 (11.23 mill rate). Full tables and method notes live on each study edition; atlas readings for the same slug open from the topic buttons.

Kamloops in brief

Kamloops is easier to place once you use the older name. City pages translate Tk'emlúps as where the rivers meet, home of the Tk’emlupsemc, the people of the confluence, where the North and South Thompson come together in the Thompson Valley. Tourism shortens the whole package to the 'Loops, and the grasslands, ponderosa pines, and Thompson River do the rest of the explaining. This is Southern Interior country with big sky, grassland edges, and a working sports calendar.

The civic brand that sticks is Canada's Tournament Capital. Amateur tournaments, high-performance camps, and national events cycle through town, while the Kamloops Blazers fill the Sandman Centre and the Kamloops Storm work McArthur Island Sports & Events Centre. Thompson Rivers University keeps WolfPack nights on the board. Between games, Riverside Park and Kenna Cartwright Nature Park are the default answers for a walk, and Kamloopa Powwow and the Secwépemc Museum & Heritage Park keep Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc culture on the public calendar.

Food and brew scenes have caught up with the river story: tourism talks five microbreweries, distilleries, cideries, and Thompson Valley wineries beside the tournament hotels. Castanet now carries the daily desk that used to live under Kamloops This Week. OpenStats still scores the city carefully on permits and radon among other measures, but hometown talk starts with confluence, tournaments, and which park you meant. Kamloops Lake sits on the tourism map when the rivers feel too familiar. If the rivers, the 'Loops, and Tournament Capital all show up, the map is right.

OpenStats Broadband Download Speeds

OpenStats

Cities ranked by estimated best advertised download (Mbps). Anchored to the current ISED National Broadband Data vintage, then backcast along a national speed curve with city-specific fiber-arrival and 50/10 availability paths so relative ranks can change over the decade. Not a claim of audited historical hex maps for every year.

OpenStats

OpenStats City Score

OpenStats

Dimensional average of OpenStats open-data pillars for each panel year 2016–2025: tax, construction, connectivity, indoor air, water, seismic hazard, population growth, and crime severity. Each series is scored 0–1 within its edition; series in the same pillar are averaged, then all eight pillars are averaged with equal weight. Missing pillars score at median standing (0.5). Growth and CSI use StatCan annual tables; permits, mill rates, and broadband use live rows plus documented year-varying estimates where needed. Radon, water, and PGA may be survey/model vintages carried forward and are flagged when static for more than two years. External commercial livability lists are never inputs.
